How We Choose Gear
Good design matters outdoors, but a beautiful object must also do its job after dark, in damp weather, and during an ordinary family weekend. We choose gear for the task it solves—not for a product photo alone.
Our selection process
- Start with a real campsite need. We define the user, trip type, group size, and the job the item must perform before comparing products.
- Check the measurable details. For lighting, we look at usable brightness, color temperature, runtime at stated modes, charging, weather resistance, placement, and weight. For other categories, the criteria change with the task.
- Examine materials and maintenance. We look for clear material descriptions, replaceable parts when relevant, cleaning requirements, and known limitations.
- Compare value, not just price. We consider whether a simpler item covers the same need and whether extra features add useful function or only bulk.
- Verify claims and update recommendations. Manufacturer specifications are checked against available manuals, independent information, and credible owner feedback. Specifications and availability can change, so we revisit pages when new information appears.
What “tested” means here
We only call an item hands-on tested when we have actually used that specific model and can describe the conditions. Otherwise, we label the assessment as research-based and separate published specifications from our own judgment. We will not invent field trips, battery runtimes, or durability results.
